Poor Rock Band 2 & Mirror's Edge Might Lead to EA Layoffs
Electronic Arts has three titles that are expected to disappoint in terms of sales during this holiday season, claims an analyst (thanks Gamasutra).
"Specifically, we believe several EA titles are tracking below plan at retail this holiday, including Need for Speed Undercover (with disappointing reviews), new franchise Mirror's Edge, and Rock Band 2," said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian. Sebastian.
According to Lazard, the lousy season might bring cuts at EA and product cancellations, similar to their recent termination of the shooter Tiberium.
"Importantly, we believe EA is continuing to review its cost structure and franchise base, and it is possible that management will announce further cuts in headcount and the development pipeline (including existing franchises) over the coming quarters," added Sebastian.
Sure, this isn't a problem for the company, as Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello explained recently. Could it be that they've burned the omelette too many times?

Sony Slashing Costs, Cutting 16,000 Jobs
Many people were affected by the recent worldwide economic crisis. "Sudden and rapid changes in the global economic environment" will force Sony to lay off 8,000 of its 160,000 jobs by April 2010. Reuters reports that another 8,000 more will fired from "more temporary and contract staff."
"To stay competitive in the accelerating global network environment, we will always carefully review and make structural changes, if necessary, in order to further expand and strengthen the PlayStation business," SCE said to GamesIndustry.biz.
Sony Computer Entertainment (responsible for PlayStation manufacturing and game development) is going to be involved in the upcoming review.
Yep, it's a hack'n'slash'n'cut business.
